Alkaloids of pyridine type (actinidine, chatinine, skyanthine, valerianine, valerine). Iridoids (valepotriates): valtrates (e.g. valtrate, isovaleroxyhydrinvaltrate, acevaltrate, valechlorine), didrovaltrates (e.g. didrovaltrate, homodidrovatrate, deoxydidrovaltrate, homodeoxydidrovaltrate), isovaltrates (e.g. isovaltrate, 7-epi-deacetyl-isovaltrate) and valerosidate (i.e. iridoid glukoside). Volatile oil containing a lot of components including monoterpenes (e.g. α- a β-pinene, kamfene, borneol, eugenol, isoeugenol in form of esters), sesquiterpenes (e.g. β-bisabolene, karyofylene, valeranone, ledol, pacifigorgiol, valerianol, valerenol, series of valerenyl esters, valerenal, valerenic acid together with its acetoxy- a hydroxy-derivatives). Polyphenolic acids (caffeic and chlorogenic), β-sitosterol, methyl-2-pyrrolketone, choline, tannines, resin, saccharides.
Sedative agent (sedativum), soothing agent (weak tranqullizing effect), anti-anxiety agent (anxiolyticum), acts with calming effect on the central nervous system (ataracticum) and relieves sadness (thymolepticum).
